Part 29

Erica sat on her bed, fiddling with her tablet when there was a knock at her door. She got up and walked toward it, double tapped with two fingers the part of the door at face level. A screen appeared and she saw Jessie outside. Erica clicked the control panel to open the door and Jessie walked in. She looked around, clothes and magazines on the floor, no pictures or posters. Jessie watched as Erica went back to sitting on the bottom bunk.
“I hope you disciplined Frank and Elijah and the others,” Erica said.
   “For what?”
“For what? Letting MC and Viridian go,” Erica responded in a frustrated manner.
“How am I suppose to discipline them? Say they can’t go out with their friends? That they can’t go out to the city? Or should I take away their allowance? Araminta and April both homeless, Elijah’s rich, and Frank’s family wasn’t swimming in cash anyway,” Jessie countered.
“They let two criminals go,” Erica stressed.
“Two people who were probably being manipulated by a mysterious sorceress. They did bad things and should go to jail but MC would probably be killed by some angry prison guard, his gauntlets disappearing from lock up and sold to some future enemy. Viridian would fare better in jail, and probably be forced into some sort of military outfit. Renate decided to take the hit, and she’s going to have it hard. Mateo and Charm are supposedly dead-both suffering stab wounds to the heart,” Jessie listed, “Besides, I’ve seen to it that the pair are secured, away form causing trouble in the US of A.”
“Those two could still cause us problems.”
   “Us?”

Part 28

Mateo and Charm walked the the cave which lead into the garage of the Guard’s headquarters. Earlier the two made a stop at a museum in Kentucky before arriving in this part of West Virginia. Both trips took a lot out of Charm and Mateo was worried she was pushing herself to hard.
Charm suddenly stopped and Mateo turn to her and asked, “Whats wrong?”
“There is a barrier here. I can not go farther until you undo the seal,” Charm said reaching into her purse. She handed Mateo two things. Once was a flat jewel, the size of a coaster. The other a bottle of alcohol.
“The jewel will home in on the seal. The alcohol will dissolve it. Just toss it on it,” Charm said.
“Then we walk in and you cast that spell you were talking about?” asked Mateo.
   “Yes,” Charm smiled.

Part 27

“Check this out,” MC said looking over the laptop as Viridian flipped through a book, “Division has moved out of South America.”
“They defeated the Daga?” Viridian asked.
“Not exactly. A lot of damage done and several shot callers on both sides caught. I imagine its going to be mum for a while and whoever takes over is gonna keep quiet even longer,” MC answered.
“The Daga started a war, the US government sent troops in to assist just to benefit their own interests and the drug war continues to make big profit in the Western world,” Viridian ranted on.
“So they will touch down in the US. Give us grief unless we move out soon,” MC said.
“Charm said they will go down South first. Troubles down there,” Viridian told him.
“I looked into that the other day. Several mysterious deaths, some important people. Fishy circumstances. It’d be surprising if they skip us to deal with that,” MC replied.
“Probably some government cover up business. Going down there means some interest is at stake.”
“Plus we’re just foolish children who don’t know what we want. Blah blah blah reverse racism, blah blah blah plight of the rich, blah blah blah corporations are people too, blah blah blah if blacks and Mexicans don’t want to be harassed they should live in better areas and dress better. Same bull they say to make upper class white people feel like they ain’t a problem,” MC rattled off.
“They control the news. I say we burn each of those news stations down,” she suggested.

Part 26

It had been a few days since Sally arrived in East Ridge. The two’s first day working together Pearl was further enamored with Sally’s skill and resolve. She had much interest in Sally’s stories and enjoyed talking with her greatly. Their second night they went out and patrolled Pearls city but all they dealt with were a few drug dealers so they called it an early night which gave Pearl time to rack her brain and get Sally to tell her stories. Next day they trained in sparring, went out for lunch and Pearl showed Sally through the city. That night they ventured in Chattanooga as their alter egos and dealt with a crew of heavily armed bank robbers.
Sally was getting ready to leave in a couple days and Pearl decided to herself, Just go for it.
The two met up early to catch a ride into Memphis. They checked out the Dixon Gallery and Garden and went into town to sample the stores. Neither were big shoppers but they both picked up a few things. Sally listened to Pearls stories of her fights and battles while urging Sally to tell her more about her adventures and homeworld. Later in the afternoon Pearl took Sally to a special Memphis landmark, the Sun Studio.
Sun Studio was once the place where legends such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and others recorded. The studio was a brick building with one story side that sported the SUN logo above the white portioning, a door in the center with two windows on each side. The next side was two stories tall with the windows above having vintage pictures overseeing the street, which Sally found a little unsettling. Another front floor, a long window with signs, and green overhead shade. Pearl took a seat on the bench and Sally joined her.

Erica was outside the hangar when Araminta joined her. They looked at each other and Erica quickly turned her gaze.
“We plan on the attack for tomorrow,” Araminta said what Erica already knew.
“They don’t have their base,” she responded lumping the rest of the team together without her.
“We. It’s we,” Araminta said and Erica shook her head to that. Araminta continued, “We believe we close enough to pinpoint them and from there a simple matter of elimination.”
   “You fighting?”

“We got movement,” Gravity Woman said into her collar which was hooked to a com link.
“I’m linking into nearby camera’s but you know the limitations to that,” Professor said over the line.
“Yes, I’m following them from the liquor store,” Gravity Woman told her.
A couple blocks down SubHuman, Brown Widow and Mr. Monster were in a stolen van. SubHuman at the wheel, Widow in the passenger seat and Mr. Monster in the back.
“I’m following now,” SubHuman announced into his jackets com.
   “Acknowledged,” Professor said.
“You think they’re going back to their base?” Brown Widow asked.

Part 23

Jessie and Go stood with their backs to the fence in the yard of the Manly household. Both had sodas in their hands and watched as the oldest sibling in the family, Alannah, was working the grill. The pair met her and the rest of Hunters family a few days ago. Alannah was the head of the household and in her mid twenties. She was the only of the four with black hair which made Jessie assume that she dyed it. Alannah had a few tattoos and piercings and it was easy to guess that once she was the rebellious one of the Manly children, until fate made it so that she would have to look after the family. The other daughters included Britney, the middle sister, who had just turned twenty. The youngest of the girls and the baby of the family was Rosemary, who was thirteen.
Go was curious as to what happened to the parents but held his questions while Jessie was aware of their situation. The Guard, or rather a portion of the Guard, looked a bit deeper into their Hunter’s background than some of the other new teammates. Hunter had tried out for a spot in the government sponsored team Division-1, that made the team anxious. As it did with Eartha and Erica who had both been attempted recruits.
Jessie reflected on the family situations of the parents, both having passed in a terrible situation. Alannah took on raising the family with the money left to them by insurance and support of grandparents plus working part time. Jessie could see she took her role seriously. This made her think about the families of her teammates that were met with tragedy. Sally, her partner and dear friend, lost her parents after arriving to Earth. Antoine lost his mother in a car crash. Reed’s father dead and mother frail in the explosion that gave him his powers. Araminta’s adoptive parents were murdered by the cult who was involved in her birth. Aamil’s parental situation, some would be surprised he does as well as he does. Jessie was not, Aamil was a strong one.
Jessie then spied a look over at Go, family divorced and now living in Long Beach, California with his mom and some of her family. Pearls parents and Arturo’s parents were divorced as well. Frank’s parents were never married, breaking up when him and his sister were young. She thought about that. How her parents had an on and off relationship for years-her sister Lucita being her half sister. It was a combination of her status as a hero, Sally needing a new family, and her parents own issues and loneliness that brought them back together. It was an open relationship and that annoyed Jessie to some degree but she was lucky. As was Elijah and Eartha. Well, Eartha’s father was actually her step dad but she lived in a two parent household. April and Erica’s parents were also still together, but both were rejected. April for being who she is rather than the Adam O’Conner they wanted her to be. Erica, her parents just did not want to deal with having a superhuman (or rather magically inclined) daughter.
   “Deep in thought?” asked Go.
   “Yes I am. You?”
“Was. Then decided to try and focus my brain power on how good the food will taste.”

Part 22

Pair of cars raced down Fenlon avenue and made a hard turn on East Neveda street. A short distance ahead a local police station. One the occupants of the cars planned on visiting. A blast hit the road ahead and both cars swerved. Huntsman landed on the street with his gun arm aimed. The occupants got out and stared down the purple colored machine kid.
   “You alone?” asked Mateo.
“You absorb energy right?” Huntsman said before unloading a large blast on Mateo sending him flying.
